CNC Grondstoffen BV
CNC Grondstoffen BV is a leading company in the world for the production of mushroom compost. It is a large company with three locations and delivers not only in Netherlands but also exports to many countries. The site-manager of CNC Milsbeek is the energetic Mirjam Klein Rot. She stands tall being a woman in a men's world, always searching for ways to make the company more efficient and sustainable. The cooperation with Vink has led to a unique cooling solution for mushroom compost. Mirjam explains how:

Heating process
‘The Netherlands is the leader in the mushroom compost industry. The raw materials are actually waste products that are re-used such as horse manure, straw, chicken manure and gypsum. During the production process the material is heated up and cool down and then mushroom hatching is added. After 16 days the mycelium is growing and the product is ready for transportation to the nursery garden. We need cooling technique because the heating process inside the compost continues which makes the mycelium grow. We need to slow this down until the compost is at our buyers'.

Transportation

'Temperature control is very important because the mycelium may not get too hot. Because we export to all corners of Europe and our trucks sometimes are for two days on the move, we were looking for an alternative refrigerant. We came up with the idea to add ice. Until now, this has not been used to cool compost. We have elaborated this idea together with Vink refrigeration. This is how we set up our current production line where flake ice is added to packages of 20 kg. We work with Vink Koeltechniek because there aren't that many suppliers of ice makers and we knew that they are specialists.'

Ice makers
‘We have two scale ice machines from Geneglace installed by Vink. This produces -8 ⁰C ice of great quality. it is easy to dose and consists of thin ice flakes which are mixed with the compost. Then it gets wrapped and transported. We don't add more than 1,5% of ice to make sure the product doesn't get too wet.'

Low maintenance costs
‘Of all our machines, the ice machines have the lowest maintenance costs. That is of course important to us because we want to work eco-friendly and cost effective. We enjoy our cooperation with Vink because they are straightforward, honest and follow up on made agreements. It's a good company to work with.'

Innovative and environmentally conscious
‘Together with Vink we came to an innovative solution to cool our product, in a way that has not been done before. CNC is committed to innovation and the environment. With those two things in mind, we have an installation to limit the emission of ammoniac and scents. Also, we are investing in research, because actually very little is known about mushrooms and where the fungus grows on. There seem to be indications that mushroom protects against breastcancer. Those are interesting developments that we should research. For this reason we appointed a R&D director a year ago. He is in charge of realizing and directing the research on mushrooms.'
